Post #27: Young Man With Camera

Young Man With Camera

In my artwork, I have drawn a book character’s eye with a complex reflection in it. The excerpt of writing below is kind of a summary of the book and it explains what the eye is seeing. It is written in the point of view of the character itself. This book is called “Young Man With Camera”, by Emil Sher. Enjoy!!

They call me T—… I prefer not to use my real name. I know that somebody will turn a normal name into something abnormal. I fear everything that I do because of someone. Someone out there to get me. My tormenter, Ryan. He and his two best friends (I call them Joined At The Hip) come to where I am. They tease me, insult me, attack me and never get caught because everybody trusts Ryan and thinks that he is as innocent as you can get when really he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I don’t know why he does it. Maybe it’s the scars on my face that leaves the world laughing and my mom crying, blaming herself from when fire marked me when I was very young even though now I am attracted to fire more than ever. Maybe he harasses me because I like photography, catching the moment. To make magic with the camera, to convey a meaning and to try to make a difference. I really don’t know why he does this, leaving me to suffer.

One day I met this homeless woman named Lucy. She appreciated my love for photography and we became close friends. I keep my pictures in an abandoned building I call the Vault.  Up in the third floor in one of the rooms I kept the photographs that I love so much. The vault is kind of a retreat for me to get away from the anger and distrust of the world. It was my safe place… was. I saw something shocking up there. Joined at the Hip had tormented Lucy so much that the next morning it came in the news that Lucy was dead. However, I had caught it all on the camera so that I could get Joined at the Hip in jail even though that wasn’t the smart thing to do. They saw me video taping and now they are angrier than ever. Going to the police could be deadly. I didn’t do anything yet and as if to make sure I never do anything in the future, the next thing Joined At the Hip did was poison my best friend Sean’s dog Watson.  I felt defeated and I knew there was nothing I could do. But it was about to get worse.

It wasn’t just a coincidence that a building was submerged in flames when I wasn’t at home meaning my parents couldn’t have said that I could have never caused the fierce lighting. Due to my attraction of fire, I went to see where it was, as usual. I was okay until I saw that the Vault had been burnt. I immediately knew it was Ryan. First he killed Lucy, then Sean’s dog and know had destroyed the place I value most. In addition to that, by the way he had done it, I was going to get all the blame. Why were they after me? What had I done?  A tear in my eye, I stared at the building on fire, my camera hanging from my hand, useless, already knowing that there was nothing that could be done. My life had taken a plunge, down underneath the greatest of waves and there was no way that it would be able to float up again.
