Relay for Life is an event in collaboration with the Canadian Cancer Society where schools from across the nation come together as a community to raise money and awareness for those impacted by cancer. All of the hard work leads up to a one-night celebration of cancer survivors, our cumulative fundraising efforts, and a time to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer.
On Thursday, March 7, 2024, the Relay for Life Captains from Newmarket High School went to Relay University at the Nottawasaga Inn to learn more about bringing the event to life and encouraging students to participate. As the Recruitment Coach for Newmarket High’s Relay Committee this year, Relay University was an incredibly informative event for me where I had the opportunity to network with other Recruitment Coaches from schools across York Region, and hear from survivors in the community. I left with newfound inspiration and the bubbling motivation to encourage as many students as possible to support the cause.
Last year, on the 16th year that Newmarket High School had been partaking in Relay for Life, we reached our million dollar milestone. Youth-led initiatives like Relay for Life have so far generated over 5.1 million dollars for cancer research.
I relay so that when somebody is diagnosed with cancer, they don’t have that sinking feeling in their gut that their life is over. I relay so that families around the world can stop grieving the loss of their loved ones due to cancer. I relay for all those who don’t have anyone to relay for them. I relay because when we come together as a society, we are bigger than cancer.
