It’s debate. It’s international affairs. It’s solving modern issues through research, collaboration, and a strong resolve to enact change. It’s Model UN.
I had the pleasure of attending my first Model UN conference this Saturday, April 6, 2024. It was a full-day event hosted by the hardworking secretariat team of Maple High School’s Model UN club. I lead four other delegates from Newmarket High School who also attended the event. We were split amongst three commitees: The Disarment and International Security Committee, or DISEC; the World Health Organization, or WHO; and the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, or CSTD.
I was on CSTD as the United States of America, allowing me to engage in fruitful debate upon the development of renewable energy systems and the best way to ensure equitable access to clean-energy worldwide. The entire experience taught me so much, from writing a position paper to preface my research prior for the event, to navigating international relationships and forming blocs with countries that had similar ideals, to sharing our solutions through a resolution paper.
Through our hard work, Newmarket High School’s delegates won a total of four awards. I won Best Delegate on CSTD, winning a gavel that will be sent to me in the coming days.
I would like to thank Maple High School for putting on such a fantastic event for all of the students of the York Region District School Board, and I look forward to participating in more Model UN events in the future.
